Male Procedures
Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is an enlargement or swelling of breast tissue in males. It is most commonly caused by male estrogen levels that are too high or are out of balance with testosterone levels.
Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).
What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males due to an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels. It can affect one or both breasts and may occur at different life stages, such as infancy, puberty, or older adulthood. While hormonal changes are the most common cause, other factors like obesity, certain medications, liver disease, or anabolic steroid use can contribute to its development. Gynecomastia is generally benign but can cause physical discomfort and psychological distress, especially in adolescents and adults.
The Causes of Gynecomastia
A feminized chest appearance can occur for many reasons. For some young men and adults, the condition resolves itself over time, but others continue to have round, protruding breasts for many years. Common causes for this condition include:
- Puberty
- Drug use or abuse (including steroids and drugs with estrogen or similar compounds)
- Obesity or being overweight
- Genetic disorders
- Aging
Your first step in treating gynecomastia is understanding its root cause. After proper treatment, cosmetic surgery can revise the appearance of the chest if feminine-looking breasts remain.
Treatment for Gynecomastia
Treatment for gynecomastia depends on its underlying cause and severity. In many cases, the condition resolves on its own, particularly when it occurs during puberty. However, if the enlargement persists or causes significant distress, medical interventions may be considered.
These can include lifestyle changes, medication to correct hormonal imbalances, or surgical options such as liposuction or mastectomy to remove excess breast tissue. Consulting a healthcare provider is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment planning, as some cases may require further evaluation to rule out underlying health issues.
Gynecomastia Surgery
This procedure is tailored to each patient to meet their unique needs. For men with excess glandular tissue, our surgeons make a small incision along the edge of the areola or beneath the breast to surgically remove the tissue. In cases where there is primarily fibro-fatty tissue, liposuction is often the most effective approach. These techniques can also be combined to achieve a more sculpted and masculine chest.
Gynecomastia Surgery Candidates
Men considering gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, often have excess breast tissue or fat in the chest, resulting in a more feminine appearance. Ideal candidates for the procedure typically experience one or more of the following reasons:
- Excess breast tissue.
- Excess fat.
- Psychological concerns.
- Cosmetic reasons
Recovery after Surgery
Most male breast reduction patients experience some discomfort and soreness in the days following surgery, along with bruising and swelling. Wearing a support garment helps minimize swelling and protects the surgical results. While most bruising and swelling subside within a few weeks, it may take up to three months for the final outcome to become fully visible.
Dr. Gal recommends that patients limit physical activity for a few days and gradually return to their normal routine as they feel comfortable. Strenuous exercise or any activity that puts pressure on the chest should be avoided for at least a month. Once recovery is complete, patients can enjoy long-lasting results for many years.
Will I Have Scars After My Gynecomastia Surgery?
Scarring after gynecomastia surgery is minimal, as the procedure is designed to be as discreet as possible. Surgeons typically make small incisions along the edge of the areola or in natural creases of the chest to reduce visibility.
Over time, scars fade significantly and become less noticeable, especially with proper aftercare, including scar treatments and sun protection. While some faint scarring may remain, most patients find it to be a small trade-off for the improved chest contour and confidence they gain from the procedure.
