If you are male and have large or swollen-looking breasts, you have a very common condition called gynecomastia. This problem can range from minor puffiness to stretched areolas and loose skin, and it can significantly affect how you feel about yourself, especially without your shirt on. Gynecomastia surgery is the most effective way to stop hiding and enjoy your active life.

What is Gynecomastia?

Men who have gynecomastia typically have some type of imbalance between estrogen and testosterone in their bodies. While all men have some estrogen, too much of it, in comparison to testosterone levels, can cause your breasts to enlarge. Factors that contribute include:

  • Hormonal changes like puberty
  • Certain medications or illicit substances
  • Medical conditions
  • Genetics
  • Excess body weight

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Once breast tissue and fat have expanded, gynecomastia will not usually go away by itself. The most effective treatment is gynecomastia surgery, also called male breast reduction. Dr. Kouli customizes this procedure based on your unique condition since each individual will have a different combination of fat and glandular breast tissue.

Gynecomastia surgery may use liposuction to remove fat and excision to remove breast tissue. In severe gynecomastia cases, Dr. Kouli may remove stretched skin and restore your areolas to their normal size. The result is a flatter, more masculine chest with contours you feel confident about.

What are the Benefits of Male Breast Reduction?

Men who have gynecomastia surgery report improvements in many areas of their lives, including:

  • More freedom to wear fitted shirts or go without one
  • A return to activities like swimming
  • An increase in confidence
  • A more active social life

While many men try to ignore it, jokes about “man boobs” can feel personal to individuals with gynecomastia. Male breast reduction lets you put an end to self-consciousness and covering up so you can enjoy being yourself.

This is the time you get to know and become comfortable with Dr. Kouli and the staff at Esthetica of San Diego, the Center of Cosmetic Surgery. All your questions will be answered as thoroughly as possible.

As Dr. Kouli always says, “no question is a stupid one.” You will have a detailed discussion about the different techniques of surgery. Dr. Kouli will go over most risks and potential complications of surgery and will explain the pre-operative and post-operative process.

What is Recovery Like After Gynecomastia Surgery?

Since gynecomastia surgery can be performed in different ways, the recovery time varies. You can expect that the area will feel sore and swollen after your procedure, and you will receive instructions on how to care for the area. Most men can return to work in one to two weeks and their usual exercise routine within about six weeks, but your timeline will vary.

Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Male breast reduction may be recommended for you if enlarged breasts are affecting your confidence. Good candidates should be healthy enough for the procedure and have realistic expectations. Dr. Kouli will assess your condition and determine whether surgery is the right approach for you.

People with certain medical conditions should not have gynecomastia surgery. If your problem is the result of a medical condition, that condition may need to be treated. While the removed breast tissue will not grow back, the underlying cause of your hormonal imbalance may, in uncommon situations, need to be addressed.

I had an incredible experience at esthetica. Dr. Kouli is both personable and professional. “Everyone in the office is friendly and aim to make you feel as comfortable as possible. I’d highly recommend their services.
